I be a dumdum newb with EX-D and protools, because movin to north China it was just too much to drag the Tascam 2488 around. So i grabbed a new MBox mini, protools LE, and EZDrummer to replace the drum samples i had on the tascam 2488 for songwriting and recording.
My first newb dumdum attempt, i’ve been tryin to drag EZDrummer wav files to new stereo instrument tracks, but this seems to be a definite newbie dum daw no no. Can anyone tell me how to get some EZDrum tracks on there so i can focus on gettin back to song writin”?? Please.
By the way, toontrack instructional videos don’t work up here i Harbin.
This all happened March 1 2011, so my learnin curve for both EZ-D and Pro-LE is like rock climbin with a beer in one hand and my girlfriend on the same rope.
Hi skronger,
first make sure you are updated to version 1.3.0, the update is available in your Toontrack account.
Next, open the attached Pro Tools Session. There you will see how to set up the plugin on a Stereo Instrument Track and route its separate outputs to Aux Tracks.
I presume you are using Pro Tools 8.x. If you do not have MIDI controller (keyboard?) of some kind, you can use the included MIDI grooves as a starting point.
You access and preview them by clicking the ‘Open Grooves’ button in the plugin interface.
When you find grooves you like, you drag-and-drop them to the Pro Tools EZdrummer Instrument Track.
It’s easiest to find the right place on the Pro Tools Timeline if your Edit view in Pro Tools is set to ‘Grid’ view and the resolution is 1Bar.

Ahhh, ur the man John! That link you stuck on there…that beamed me right onto a new protools session with the same tracks as the EZDrummer mixer……perty dam cool! No clue how u did that. I am so frikin newbie that i cant even find my floating control panel in protools, it floated away somewhere….and no i do not have a controller yet, ive looked around the China streets here a bit and online and the cheapest seems to be about 300-500 chinese $ or about 32-54 Euro, but not the recommended brands.
Anyways, i did as you say…i didn’t realize EZDrummer automatically showed up in Protools as an instrument…yea…so i drug a few grooves into a new stereo instrument track i created and they play fine….so….ya got me question answered 1st try…which makes you a real pro from Stockholm.
I am curious, i guess this is really a protools question, but why can i not arm the track and record hits on any of the drums or cymbals? When i arm the track with record-ready, you can see the meter rise for each hit, but if u push play-record, nothing records as you hit the drums (with computer mouse). I have seen this question on Harmony central forums and i guess it needs to have a controller….it just doesn’t make logical sense to see it register on the meter but not record.
Well, i sure got a lotta learnin to do…really cuttin into my songwritin time! Think i’ll have a Harbin Snow beer and be happy i have some drum grooves i can play with now….maybe i’ll get drunk and try to sing…as afterall, my last class was today!
Thanks fer the quick answer Dr.

You can’t record the mouse clicks inside Pro Tools. Some hosts allow you to use your computer keyboard as a MIDI input device. Reaper, for example, allows you to assign your computer keyboard keys to trigger the sounds in EZdrummer.

Right….i remember the salesman in St. John, New Brunswick, Canada…he told me about reaper before i bought protools and EZ. I guess entering this world instead of built in home studios like Tascam’s 2488 and their newer NEO which have …NO…HAD drum samples. Actually, the NEO they pulled the drum samples out, with the excuse that nobody used them. In fact, since the pulled them out, i left tascam. Clearly there was a new industry born. Ok, now i must be the singer, song writer, guitar player, bass player, and learn to 2-finger a keyboard as well….like Linus of “Charley Brown”. I can do it, meanwhile will have a look at reaper.
In my mind, the protool software should not show that the mouse-tapped notes are registering on the meter…it is misleading. But, i know nothing….tere might be a good reason for that.
thanks Scott. U from moose country in Mass??? Cool. Actually i bought my tascam 2488 from a store in NY…online….Boynton pro Audio, had it mailed to canada…awesome deal!
thanks Scott. U from moose country in Mass???
Hells yeah moose country. I know quite a few folk that have ran into a moose now and then…it ain’t pretty.

The link provided by john is very nice as i mentioned. However, today it doesnt play with just as single instrument track with anything on it. Protools Error message (-9128) says i am running out of CPU power. Says remove some RTAS pllug ins (just ezdrummer used), or increase CPU usage limit in the playback engine dialog??????
If i should go to a protools forum…jus let me know..
By the way, i did upgrade EZDrummer a few days ago, and have over 50G of free space, and 2.53 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, with memory of 4 GB 1067 MHz DDR3 (2009 macbook pro)
roadkill moose…very best freezerfill
Hi skronge,

to show/hide the Transport, you press Cmd+1 (on the numerical keyboard).

The Instrument Track is set up so it Records MIDI as Input for the plugin on the Track and outputs the Audio from it. That’s why clicking the drums will register on the meters when you’re in Rec mode.

Well, as a Pro Tools user (BTW, is it PT 8 or PT 9?) you’ll get used to seeing error messages like that, since playing with the Playback Engine is part of utilizing the setup the best way.
E.g. if you track a guitar or some vocals, you do not want latency because it makes it hard to play, so you set the Playback Engine to a low Hardware Buffer Size, like 64 – 128.
However, a low Hardware Buffer Size makes it harder for the computer to keep up with processing; compressors, EQ’s, EZdrummer, etc. Therefore you might want to raise the Hardware Buffer Size when you’re starting to use plugins.
This is all dependent on your computer’s CPU power, of course. I think you and I have fairly similar MacBook Pros, so you should get a decent songwriting tool with it and Pro Tools.
There is other stuff that might affect the playback, yielding errors like that. Running other apps or tasks in the background might. E.g. I used to have a problem with my old MBP that made it impossible to have Airport on when using Pro Tools.
If you have Pro Tools specific questions, I recommend you head over to the DUC pond at http://avid.duc.com
Be sure to post in the right Forum, i.e. if you’re using Pro Tools LE 8.x on a Mac, that’s where you should go.

Sounds good Meistro, head on over to avid. Aswell i know since u mention the buffer stuff there is a big yarn about that in their manual and its high time i read that again. I had everything shut down, internet and apps all off. I am on PT LE 8.0.4
I better learn about this buffer stuff. The reason i went with tascam in 2006 was because i didnt think latency was dealt with enuf on the computer based interfaces, but now this is my first try to see if that was overcome…seems there is still a ways to go to make it perfect. So i have to learn how to adjust buffer size to get what i want. When will buffer size be a historical term???? soon i hope.
thanks again…i feel i will be back here soon enuf anyways
