2 weeks ago i bought Beatstation for playing in real time with my td-9. I use it in toontrack solo. Of course you can use all your sdx or ezx expansions but i launch sd as a second drummer for the drums (beatstation doesn’t give you all sd has for bleeding, layers etc…).
After this i delete some midi notes from my sd kit : the rim pads for example.
In beatstation, i also delete midi notes used by sd, just keeping the rim pads ones.
With beatstation, you can affect until 4 sounds on a pad, wav, mp3, but also midi grooves or rex files…
Each sound can be triggered normally, or with effects, changing the attack, the pitch, reversed, looped etc… you can affect sounds to muted groups : if two sounds are in the same group, triggering one of them will stop the other…
But what i discovered and what is great for me as a drummer, is rex files : these ones can be played in 3 modes : sequentially, random mode or whole loop… For those who don’t know, rex loops are sound files made as loop files, it could be drum loop, or guitar, or bass or everything else. Each rex file contains more than one sound, each called “slice”, and you can affect one of them or the entire rex file on a beatstation pad.
Finally, i affect an entire rex file on a beatstation pad and i often choose sequential triggering : for example, i affect a rex file containing 5 different sounds (slices) of guitar stabs… i choose sequentially triggering and then it’s time to play drums : let’s say the rex file is affected to my tom 1 rim, each time i play on this rim, one of the 5 different sounds of guitar stabs will play and when i play this rim again, the following of this 5 different sounds will be triggered : this is really funny or creative for us drummers…. you can play drums and trigger other instruments or effects…
It’s as if you can affect multiple sounds on one pad…
The cherry on the top ? The rex file can be a drum loop containing only drum sounds : multiple drum sounds on one pad…. very funny
