Hi,
Due to an OS upgrade to Win7 64bit I have to reinstall all my software.
I will be using my TT products with Cubase ES4 and Studio5.
On my main hard-disc I have a C (boot) partition and a D partition where I install my software to, so EZDrummer and all my other TT products will be installed into D.
Now it seems Cubase (even though installed on drive D as well) by default created a vst plugins folder in the C partition, and EZdrummer automatically dropped its dll. file there.
Is it supposed to be this way? or would it be better to have the vst plugins folder on the same partition where the program is installed? Is there a way to change this after installation or would I have to re-install to get the vst- plugins folder to be on partition D?
Or is it fine to have the program installed on the D partition while the vst plugins folder is on the C partition?
Thanks,
Lars

It makes no difference really where the dll is providing your DAW know, where it is, so in this case as Cubase created the vst folder it will know, but you could create a folder anywhere you want and put the dll there, but you will have to tell Cubase where the folder is and probably rescan for vst’s.
How you set up drives and folders really is down to how you organise things, although where a vst is likely to need to load data/samples quicky that would be better on the fastest disk drive you have (if you have more than one). On my set up I have 1 hard drive partioned as c and d, c has the OS etc, d has the audio programs and on a 2nd 1.5T drive I keep all the data.
Thanks !
I was just wondering whether I made a mistake or if Cubase just creates the vst-plugins folder by default on C. Which would be a bit strange IMO since I got the option to choose where to install the program and I chose D there, so I think it would make the most sense to have the plugins folder on that partition as well.
My set up is very similar to yours. I also have a 2nd drive where I store all my projects and data.
So, should I try to change the location of the vst plugins folder? or would this really not make a difference?

Just point Cubase to the C: location of EZdrummer. It makes no difference to functionality to have more than one VST location.

Thank you John!
But my EZDrummer itself is also on the D partition, isn’t it better then to have the plugins folder also on the same partition?
I think Cubase created that VST plugin folder by default. I just thought it’s strange the plug in folder is on a different partition than the program itself.

You mean the EZHOME directory with the Sounds and MIDI?
It has no impact on functionality. If you want the .dll file to also be installed on the D: drive, you need to uninstall EZdrummer and reinstall using the Custom Install to force EZdrummer to be installed to your D: drive.
You must not move the .dll file manually.

Thanks John.
See, the thing is, my EZDrummer IS installed on the D partition of the drive. And I did use custom install to have it installed on D rather than C, but still it dropped the dll. file in Cubases’VST folder which is on C. Which I think is a bit strange?
For clarification: both Cubase AND EZDrummer are installed on the D partition, just for some reason Cubase created its VST plugins folder on the C partition, and EZDrummer dropped its dll there.
I am not sure if I made a mistake when installing Cubase, but I think I did not get any option to choose where the vst plugin folder would be located at.

The Custom install gives you both the option to decide where the EZHOME is supposed to be AND where you want to install the .dll file. If you set the EZHOME to your D: drive but not the location where the VST plugin .dll should be Custom installed, it will install to the current system VST default location.
Nothing strange when it comes to EZdrummer. Whether you can set the Cubase system VST Default at installation or afterwards, I’m a bit unsure.

Thanks!
I must have missed the option where to custom install the dll. file of EZDrummer then.
How do I do that? I only could browse for the folder where the program would be installed.
Now, if I want to fix/change this do I need to un-install EZDrummer or can I just ‘over install’ it? And what about the EZX’s I have installed, can I just leave them untouched?
Would this be worth fixing/changing, would there be a benefit at all, or is it common to have the vst-plugin folder on a different partition or drive than the software itself?
Thanks,
Lars

You would need to uninstall+reinstall EZdrummer but shouldn’t need to do the same with your EZX:s.
If it’s worth the hassle? Well, I wouldn’t do it and as I mentioned above, there’s no benefit/downside in having the .dll and the EZHOME folder on the same partition unless you think it’s more tidy that way.

Thank you very much John.
Yes, my only reason for wanting EZHome and the dll on the same partition is that I think it’s more tidy that way.
I will first try to sort out what is going on with Cubase and if I can change the location of the plugin folder, before I decide whether or not to re-install EZDrummer.
Thanks again!

I’m sorry, John, but I have one more question about what you said above:
When installing EZDrummer and a location for the dll is not specified, would it maybe create a VST folder in C itself even if it was not there previously?
I’m asking this because I saqw that Cubase did create a vst folder for its own plugins, and this folder is on my D partiton as a Steinberg-subfolder.
Now de folder where the EZDRummer dll is on C is NOT a Steinberg subfolder. This got me a bit confused, and thinking that (since apparently I missed to specify D as a location for the EZDrummer .dll) EZDrummer created that VST folder during its installation.
Does that make any sense?

If EZdrummer can’t detect a system VST folder on the C: drive, I suspect it creates one @ C:Program FilesVSTPlugins, if you do not specify a path with the Custom Install.
I would have to ask one of the programmer for confirmation, though.

Thanks !
I think I will try to fix this by re-installing EZDrummer, at least then I have peace of mind 🙂
Just to make sure since I must have missed it when I installed the last time: where do I see the option where I can choose on which drive/partition the plugin .dll file will be installed?

I saw when I run the installer/uninstaller of EZDrummer it also lets me choose the following options : ‘repair’ and ‘modify’.
Would the 2nd option (‘modify’) do what I want, ie change the location of the .dll file from C to D?
This would save me from uninstalling and re-installing.
Or is it a ‘cleaner’ install to do it the elaborate way of first uninstalling end then re-installing?
