SKU: TT669 Categories: EZdrummer Line, EZX Sound Expansions Tags: 2024-roundup, make your songs pop

Just like the ancient alchemists sought to achieve magic when combining disparate elements, this EZX fuses timeless vintage charm with cutting edge electronic sound design. The result is an intricate amalgam of drums and percussion that seamlessly meshes into a kindred but sprawling collection of kits for any facet of popular music imaginable. If you’re looking for the perfect potion for your productions, this expansion for EZdrummer 3 and Superior Drummer 3 is pure pop gold.

The Alchemy of Pop EZX was recorded by JUNO Award-winning engineer/producer/mixer Hill Kourkoutis and sampled by drummer Skye Polson (Digging Roots) at the renowned Canterbury Music Company in Toronto, ON. Featuring four kits, each representing its own niche or style, as well as a broad collection of organic and electronic shakers, stomps, claps, snaps and effects curated to fit each drum set, this is an EZX that bridges the gap between several sound ideals and provides a canopy of kits covering the entire range from raw, rich, dark, earthy and open to muffled, tight and snappy.

In addition to using classic drumsticks, one kit was recorded with brushes, one with mallets and in two, the drums were extensively muffled using towels. This all combined gives you a unique palette of colorful kits for just as much the intimately acoustic as the hard-hittingly edgy.

With Kourkoutis’ bygone-inspired but future-driven production style and Polson’s deep, swampy and behind-the-beat pocket style of groove, as showcased in the included library of MIDI, this EZX will lend you a supernatural percussive fusion firmly rooted in the vintage but pushing the sound ideas of today well into the future.

If you’re looking to add some new pocket power to your pop productions, this EZX is your new go-to.

  • Ideal for anything from rootsy beats to pocket-driven, edgy pop
  • Recorded by Hill Kourkoutis, JUNO Award-winning engineer/producer/mixer
  • Sampled by drummer Skye Polson
  • Recorded at Canterbury Music Company in Toronto, ON
  • Four unique drum kits sampled with drumsticks
  • Features kit configurations sampled both as regular and damped as well as with mallets and brushes
  • A total of 12 unique snare drums (of which several were recorded using different tools or damping)
  • Includes custom electronic and acoustic one-shots curated to fit each kit
  • Features a MIDI library unique to this EZX (performed by sampling drummer Skye Polson)

This EZX expansion requires EZdrummer 3 or Superior Drummer 3.

THE MAKING OF.

Meet the team and get a glimpse of what happened behind the scenes during the session!

MEET THE ENGINEER.

HILL KOURKOUTIS.

Having won a Best Engineering JUNO Award, made numerous acclaimed mixes, produced charting albums, performed with the likes of The Weeknd, penned hit songs for TV and written several social media smash hits, Toronto native Hill Kourkoutis is one of the most interesting names in the music industry of late. Surely, with her forward-thinking production style and fearless inclination to never stop experimenting, she’s just getting started.

How and when did you discover you had an interest for music and the arts in general?
Honestly, it’s the first thought I could remember! I loved it all: music, dancing, theatre and film/tv. The moment where I decided I wanted to be a musician, though, came at the age of three at a Greek cultural event in Toronto. My dad was giving a speech and there was a Greek band on the stage. I remember wanting to be up there so badly to play with them. I snuck up on stage, grabbed a tambourine and sat there as if I was part of the band. I knew in that moment, that’s what I wanted to do for the rest of my life.

How and when did that interest turn into an obsession for sound and recording?
By the time I was 12, I started my first band with some girls at my school. Naturally after writing our first songs, we needed to make a demo recording to pitch to labels (I was an ambitious pre-teen). I had emailed my favorite artists asking them for advice on how to get started in the business. Andrew Franey, who was in a band called Smoother, had responded to me and called us on the phone during one of our rehearsals and offered to record our first demos. He arrived at my parents’ house with a PC and a bunch of mics, set it all up in the basement and recorded us on Cool Edit Pro. He then sent us fully produced demos a few days later and something shifted in my brain. It empowered me to start producing myself…to start finding ways to translate what I heard in my mind’s ear into something I could share with people. I didn’t have to wait for anyone to create. I just needed to go and do it. From that moment on, I quickly absorbed every experience I could when it came to sound recording. I eventually graduated to other systems and integrated analog processes into my recording set-up, but that DIY bedroom producer spirit never left me.

Out of everything you do – write and perform with other artists, produce, mix, record, etc. – is there one thing you prefer?
They all kind of feed into each other. I find myself being drawn more towards writing, producing, mixing and recording. Within this whimsical studio world, I can also exercise my artist spirit and my background as a multi-instrumentalist. All of these facets of what I do can all co-exist within the studio environment and that rush of creating something from nothing never fails to excite me. I have taken a hiatus from playing live. It was a source of great anxiety for me (I have had terrible stage fright my entire life). Though I do miss it sometimes, I definitely prefer studio life.

Why was the Canterbury Music Company studio ideal for what you wanted capture in this EZX?
Canterbury is one of my favorite studios. We are so lucky to have this gem in Toronto. The room itself has a “sound.” When you combine the room with that vintage Neve console, the outboard gear and their mic locker, you get sonic magic. I also love working with Jeremy Darby, the studio’s owner, and Julian, the house engineer. Jeremy is a legend in this industry and both he and Julian are incredibly creative and collaborative engineers. I am continuously inspired by them, the space and I have gotten some of my favorite drum sounds out of that studio. When the time came to select a studio for this Toontrack project, Canterbury was the obvious choice for me.

Why was Skye the perfect drummer for this project?
Skye is such a talented and creative drummer. We also love the same sounds and types of music. I knew he would understand the vision I had for this project. Skye approaches any project he works on with much precision, curiosity and excitement. He is also very detail oriented. I felt all of these qualities were integral when it came to the art of sampling and making an EZX. Most drummers would go stir-crazy after hitting drums repeatedly for almost two weeks without playing a single groove, but Skye showed up everyday with a smile on his face with the intention of bringing the utmost professionalism, precision, passion and technique to each hit that was captured. He was a natural when it came to this process. I was very happy that we also got to record Skye playing some grooves for the MIDI component because he has such a unique pocket and comes up with some very interesting grooves. He brought his all to every facet of this process and was an absolute joy to work with, as always.

Having had the chance to work with the sounds and really digging into the product, how do you feel it all came out?
This project was a dream come true for me. I had many ambitions for it. I am always looking for versatility and authenticity in all of the music I make and the tools I use to execute it. I work in many different genres with many different types of artists. My ultimate hope was that we could create a dream pack of sounds that were a Swiss Army Knife in nature – something that was versatile for many styles and applications but that was authentically captured and translated. I wanted something that integrated the sounds that moved me growing up (analog) and the future of music (digital). Something that was reflective of music making in the present era (synthesized sounds) but deeply rooted within the natural human element of music making and the spirit of creativity (organic sounds). The addition of the pads allowed us to explore more contemporary aesthetics to accompany the organic kits we captured. It’s also how I approach sound recording and sampling… I love to sonically paint with both either on their own or together! I also wanted to provide many microphone options so that each kit could be integrated within many styles of production and mixing. Much thought was put into the microphone selections and their signal chains to provide both natural/authentic and more stylized/saturated sounds. The microphone options in the mixer alone can drastically affect the tone of the drums and having that versatility at your fingertips is priceless. It opens up every possibility and an infinite combination of sonic options. The presets are reflective of the many potentials that exist for these kits beyond their natural organic timbres and I hope they inspire other potentials for the user. Furthermore, the pads allow you to play with more contemporary “programmed” sounds that can further stylize your productions.  Everyone at Toontrack was so incredibly supportive with every idea I brought forward and the team helped execute the Alchemy of Pop EZX beautifully and seamlessly.  I didn’t just want us to record drums with microphones but create micro sonic universes that possessed unique aesthetics and evoked many potentials and emotions. It really does feel like magic due to the many transmutations that can occur through all of the sounds we captured! I listen back to the many months of work we put into this and I am just beaming. It has exceeded my expectations and I am so excited that many other creators now will have the chance to be inspired by these sounds and infuse them into their creations so that they can make their own musical alchemy.

“I am so excited that many other creators now will have the chance to be inspired by these sounds and infuse them into their creations so that they can make their own musical alchemy.”

Hill Kourkoutis

ABOUT THE STUDIO.

The Canterbury Music Company is a legendary studio located in the West Side area of Toronto. It boasts a 1,400-square-foot live room that sounds open, full and warm without producing overwhelming reverberation. The amazing timbre of the room combined with the Neve 8026 console from 1976, the large collection of modern and vintage microphones and array outboard, processors and effects available made this studio the perfect choice for an EZX that has one leg in acoustic perfection and one in cutting edge electronic sound design.

THE DRUMS.

Handpicked by Hill herself to encompass the broadest possible selection of timbres, this EZX includes four unique drum sets. Out of these, each kit was recorded using drumsticks but one also with brushes and one with mallets. In addition, two kits were captured completely damped using towels over the drum heads.

THE AER KIT.

Ideal for: Alternative, edgy indie pop/rock and alt-pop.
Characteristics: Fat, heavy, punchy, big and super dry – but present-sounding!
Sampled with: Drumsticks. Recorded open as well as damped.

“This is my personal studio kit that I use at my own studio, The Lair. I bought it off Craigslist and it is by far one of the coolest things I have found on there. I sort of have an obsession with Japanese Stencil kits from the 1960s and I truly scored a gem with this one. Everyone falls in love with it and it has the craziest wrap you’ve ever seen. It has its own character but is a very versatile little house kit!”

“When I was making my dream list of the kits I wanted to record, I came across this vintage Thermogloss kit. This kit is iconic and synonymous with two of the greatest bands and drummers in rock ‘n’ roll.  We couldn’t resist capturing its magic. I know it’s been captured before, but it hasn’t been captured through this mic configuration, signal chain and in this room before. It sounds absolutely massive.”

Ideal for: Modern-to-vintage R&B, soul and hip-hop and alt-pop.
Characteristics: Punchy, present, tight, warm, deep and low. Can be big (when open) and also small (when damped) but ultimately, mighty!
Sampled with: Drumsticks. Recorded open as well as damped.

“This is Skye’s drum kit and every time he plays it live, I think ‘this is such a great kit!’ I wanted to capture its magic in the studio. It’s a great live-sounding kit but translates beautifully in the studio. It’s another one of those kits that is super versatile. It’s a CBS-era kit that has a rounded, warm attack and quick decay. It is very present and clear but still has that vintage sound that reminds you of your favorite records growing up.”

As always, feel free to mix, match and experiment to create your own hybrid kits!

MEET THE DRUMMER.

SKYE POLSON.

Describing his own groove as rooted in the blues but with the pocket always first and foremost in mind, Skye Polson was the ideal drummer for this project. Handpicked by Hill for not only his groove but also his fantastic and genuine feel for drums.

Take us back to the very beginning. How did your interest in music first begin and how come you ended up behind a drum kit?
Both of my parents are musicians so, of course there would be plenty of great music in the house at all times. They noticed that I had an interest in rhythm and spent a lot of my time tapping on my thighs or making the start of beats on the dinner table. However, it was my Grandfather who gave me the push I needed and got me some lessons when I was 12 at a local music school to get me started. I was hooked ever since!

Which drummers do you think helped shape your style growing up and learning the instrument?
This is a big question and I could probably name a few dozen greats, but I think my biggest influences were Carlton Barrett from Bob Marley and the Wailers, Questlove from The Roots, Jon Bonham of course from Zeppelin, Brian Blade, Steve Jordan and last but definitely not least, Paul Brennan. Paul was the previous drummer for Digging Roots and has played with many Canadian groups like The Odds and Big Sugar. I had the absolute pleasure of shadowing Paul for many years. He was always very generous with me in sharing his secrets and I learned the vast majority of my feel from watching him. Thanks, Paul.

To you, what defines a great drummer?
I think the greatest drummers always have a really great ear. Playing to the music without ego, serving the songs and the art. That to me defines a great drummer.

If you were to describe your style of drumming, how would you put it?
This is a tough one. I am still trying to find words to describe my playing everyday. I think this is because I am always trying to learn as much as I can. So, if I would put to words right now it would probably sound something like laid-back, pocket groove, greasy drumming. Or something like that anyway.

How did you first cross paths with Hill and what was your thought when you were approached about this project?
Hill and I first got acquainted through the production of the last Digging Roots record. She toed the line with me when I was churning out drum tracks for the record and I found quickly how well we work together. She has an energy in the studio that really allows for creativity to flow. When Hill reached out to me about this project I was very honored first and foremost, that she considered me for the gig. I was stoked to get into the studio with her again.

Was sampling drums on this level of scrutiny anything like you expected?
I tried my best to approach the project with an open mind. Once the days started moving, I quickly realized that I was in for an amazing but intense ten days of work. The team’s work ethic and kindness made the process a joy and I found myself thrilled to get back into the studio everyday.

Hearing the final result and seeing the final product, what are your thoughts?
I am blown away by the tones in this pack. I think the variety of sounds and ideas that the kits inspire really drives home the vision that Hill wanted to execute here. Some real, earthy, rich and warm sounds that I think are usable in just about every genre. I am so proud of the team and of Hill for this work of art.

THE MIXER & THE PRESETS.

Each kit, configuration and preset features its unique set of channels and macro controls. This will allow you to fine-tune individual instrument levels, tweak the underlying effects, saturation amount and more.

THE MIDI.

Organized in convenient song structure blocks, it will be easy to build the foundation for a track directly inside of the program. To add, every song has two section of grooves and fills that mix in one-shot elements from the pads content, showcasing an even broader scope of application. As always, use this MIDI as is or as a starting point from which you can venture off in any direction from! Mix, match and let nothing but your imagination set the limit!
