Using onboard plugs with stereo out vs splitting and using your own plugs

I use UA plugins via Apollo 8 with Sup Dr 2 & 3.  A friend has recently helped me split the drums out into separate track channels in logic and is telling me to use the plugs with UA because they are better than the included plugs in SD2 or 3.  Has anyone done comparisons of their stereo out w included SD plugs vs split tracks with UA plugs-(Waves/etc or whichever you prefer)?
