Song Creator Drag-Drop or Export to DAW (Cubase 9)

Hi,

I’d like to know if after I’ve built a song in SD3 using the Song Creator and the Song Track, will I be able to drag that over to Cubase 9 and have all the sections (Verse, Pre-Chorus, Chorus, etc.) be labeled as such inside of my Cubase project.

Of course, one might simply answer “yes” or “no”, and that helps – but if this process of getting a the MIDI of an SD3 song into the DAW (Cubase 9 in this case, but could be another DAW, such as Digital Performer) could be documented via video(s) that would be “Superior” .

Also, can a song in SD3 using the Song Creator be exported as a standard MIDI file (SMF)?

You have to drag the MIDI files one by one. If you select them all and drag – they will merge into one big file. You could, of course, do that and afterwards cut it up inside your DAW.

To export MIDI files, drag and drop them from the track, or press Track menu and “Export Song as MIDI File”. This will save a .MID file, following SMF (e.g. the MIDI standard file format).

When dragging a MIDI groove to a DAW, the name of the groove will be used. E.g. it will be named “Verse 02” for example.

We will change this in a coming update to better reflect the origin of the groove though:
– if you drag from the Grooves tab – the name will be the path to the groove, so you can retrace it
– if you drag from the song track – the name will be the song part you have assigned. Have you marked it as a Chorus, it will be named accordingly.

Yes. If you select and drag more than one part from the Song Track at the same time, the resulting dropped MIDI will be named “Track ‘X'” on your DAW Track though.

I’ve been an SD3 user now for awhile, and I confirm the above dragging from SD3 into Ableton Live.

It’s very cool that we can drag one section of a track and have the section name transfer, while dragging more than one section causes the track name to transfer.   I like that alot!

One additional thing that I would find helpful is if Song Structure names and Track names could go most simply back and forth when desired.

For example, in the picture attached, I’ve dragged the Song Structure named ‘VC VC B VV 01e’ into a track, which is still named ‘Track 2’.   You can see in the picture that the Song Structure remains highlighted, and the Track 2 tab remains selected.

So, I suggest that right-clicking on a specific Song Structure offer on option to send that name to become the currently highlighted track name.   And vice-versa, right-clicking on a specific track name could offer on option to send that name to become the currently highlighted Song Structure name.

Along the same line, ‘Save Track as Structure’ could be joined by a second command ‘Save Track as Structure with Name’.

You can grok that I’m trying to work with a meaningful Song Structure naming convention, and I’d like to be able to propagate those names, both within SD3 and when exporting to the DAW, without having to retype them or explictly do a long error-prone edit-copy-paste dance.

Hi,

As of SD3  3.2.4  (and Ableton Live 11) part names dragged from the SD3 Song Track into a clip slot, or into the arranger, come over named simply as ‘Track 0’.

We seem to have gone backwards somewhere along the line!

For me, this is a big deal.
