A way to edit an existing groove track back from the DAW

From what I read and see in tutorials, It appears that most EZD2 and SD customers start with a groove and then add bass, accompanyment, melody, etc. But my mind starts with the melody or the hook and I then flesh out the song from there. As a result, I add the drums later in the song. And when devloping a song, I often find that I want to drag the existing groove from my DAW back into EZD2 so I can let it find other variations, often just wanting to turn the Amount up to add more hits, for example.

I’ve tried to do this, but EZD2 won’t let me, so I’m recommending that the ability to drag a MIDI track from a DAW back into EZD2 would definitely be of value to at least some of us. Please consider it. Thanks!

EZdrummer 2 does support dragging MIDI files from the DAW however only certain DAW’s allow this behaviour.

I’ve tried to ‘drag and drop’ as well as ‘copy and paste’ back from both Logic Pro X and Pro Tools 11 without success.
However I have successfully dragged(?) MIDI from the Desktop into EZDrummer2.

That’s interesting! I wonder if it’s possible to drag a MIDI file out of PT11 onto the desktop and then drag it into EZD2. I’ll try that tomorrow when I’m in the studio. Perhaps someone from Toontracks can weigh in tomorrow about that and whether or not there’s some other workaround that does the trick.

It is possible to put the midi file from the desktop and set it into ezd2. You can also simply playback from your daw and push the record button of ezd2. To create that midi file on the desktop you sometimes must use the DAW export function depending on its functionality.

That’s true. In fact, I’m embarrased that I’d not thought of that considering that I export MIDI tracks to files all the time; I’m just not one to place them on the desktop, which I obviously can do. I was thinking in drag and drop mode because that’s fast and efficient, and therefore, my preference. Hopefully, Toontracks will comment on this today and let us know what faster options exist and when we might expect to be able to directly drag MIDI tracks from PT11 directly into EZD2.

If you have “Follow Host” active and click the record button inside EZdrummer2, starting playback in ProTools will record any MIDI sent to EZdrummer2, so you can just copy the MIDI that way. Hope that helps

Thanks, Patrik! I’ll try that. I did try to drag a MIDI file from the desktop into EZD2, but could not get it to work. The file would not move from the desktop into the app. It could be some Windows 7 setting or some such.

No, Pro tools AAX plugins do not allow dragging back into EZdurmmer 2.

You can not drag and drop a file from the desktop to the pro tools plugin but you can drag and drop a file from the desktop to EZDrummer 2 stand alone. You can then save the EZdrummer 2 project (menu > Project > Save project). Finally you would open this project in EZDrummer 2 launched in pro tools (menu > Project > Load project)

That’s more of a pain because, as I mentioned earlier in this thread, I never work on a song with just the groove. For me, I think in melodies, so I always add the groove after I’ve fleshed out much of the song. Therefore, it’s harder to go back and forth on the groove using saving and loading in standalone. I need to do this in PT11 so I can keep listening to the groove and groove changes against the song components I’ve already created. But I do appreciate your info — thanks again!

I hate to disagree with you but I have been successful at dragging MIDI from the Desktop or from folders on external hard drives into the EZDrummer2 plugin within Pro Tools 11 (on my MacBook Pro with OSX).

Yep, dragging MIDI files from the Finder directly to the EZdrummer 2 Song Track works here as well (PT 11.1.3 HD OS 10.8.5) but not from Pro Tools to Finder.

Hi, so is dragging my MIDI groves form the DAW into the Toontrack’s “MY MIDIFILES” folder allowed with Cubase? Or do I have to export them and manually place them into the “MY MIDIFILES” folder? This is a very important feature; it would save a lot of time. I am sad that you will not allow the user to mix drum kits, but even more sad that the user can not use their own samples.
