EZmix - Toontrack
Have we, in this age of super-fast processors and amazing software, finally reached the point where a computer can mix your track for you? Well, no. But EZmix from Toontrack does offer up a streamlined way for you to tweak your drums, instruments and vocals with just a few clicks.
EZmix runs within your host program as a VST, Audio Unit or RTAS plug-in, and once you’ve strapped an instance across your channel, buss or master you can choose from a huge array of presets that contain combinations of the 16 built-in effects. These range from simple EQs, delays and reverbs to sound-fattening distortion, tape simulation and bit-crush effects. Each preset has several effects but only two sliders to control its parameters, with the third slider on the interface controlling the output volume. Categories include vocals, guitar, bass and, of course, a large selection of drum mix tools.
We loaded up an old mix and were quickly able to create a completely different version just by loading a multiple instances on each track and tweaking the presets. Toontrack has streamlined the CPU hit f the software very effectively and we were easily able to load effects onto each track. For the price, this is a fantastic-sounding plug-in with the potential to really help craft your mix. Some will find the lack of visual feedback and editing options frustrating, but this also encouraged you to use your ears when making mix decisions.
This isn’t a wonder plug-in that will make al your tracks sound perfect, but for beginners it could be a very handy shortcut to a more polished, professional sound.
Verdict: A great-sounding plug-in that can help shape your mix elements with just a few clicks.
