Working with MIDI has always been, shall we say, a bit technical and not too creative at times. Not to mention, a bit of a vibe-killer as you hastily search through your massive MIDI library for that certain clip that’s going to “glue” your song together. Enter Toontrack’s EZ Player Pro. It’s a MIDI tool designed for use with percussive samplers that will make your life a whole a lot easier as well as a lot more interesting. The main idea behind EZ Player Pro is organization for your drum samplers, virtual or hardware based. EZ Player brings your entire MIDI library right into your session with the ease of a browser and the ability to preview your clips in real-time right alongside your current project.
Working as a virtual instrument allows EZ Player’s MIDI engine to give you much more functionality and control over your clips in just about any “host” program you may choose to use, as well as being its own stand-alone groove workstation for creating your own drum clips with Toontrack Solo. The stand-alone option only works with EZDrummer or Superior Drummer. The browser is mainly used for previewing and organizing your MIDI files as well as being able to drag and drop them wherever you may need them, into your project or into the arranger for some serious manipulation.
The really impressive aspect of the arranger is the depth at which you can edit and manipulate your MIDI clips. With its multi-track layering and recording capabilities, the arranger is essentially a sequencer for your drum sampler with MIDI mapping features that allow you to integrate and use MIDI clips from any currently available sampler format. Exporting clips from the arranger are also easily added to your browser for use in other projects as well as splitting MIDI parts into individual pieces for further editing.
