Tell us a little more about yourself. How and why you started playing, who and what inspired you etc? I had a musical upbringing - I played piano from the age of 3 or 4, then went through a few other classical instruments before settling on the electric guitar when I was 14, after being in awe of the older popular kids at school pulling crowds rocking out in the canteen entrance. When the fad died out I kept playing, and here I am today!
What songwriters and musicians inspire you today and where do you see your musicianship in five or ten years from now? It’s hard to pinpoint just a few guys... I listen to a pretty huge range of different styles from day to day. Right now I’m drawing a lot of influence from the new school progressive metal bands like Periphery, The Safety Fire, Chimp Spanner and HAARP, and also some of the real virtuoso soloists like Andy Timmons, Greg Howe, Guthrie Govan, Emil Werstler and Frank Gambale. At the same time I’m listening to a lot of electronic music like Telefon Tel Aviv, Squarepusher and BT. We’ll see what comes of it all, I’d definitely like to do a solo album so I can really delve into jazz fusion and perhaps even draw on my old classical upbringing as well.
What is your relation to electronic drums? I use electronic drums to record pretty much everything I do! You can’t beat the fact that programs like Superior 2.0 give you access to the absolute highest quality drum sounds and processing available, without any of the expense or logistics of having to record live drums in the top level studios. My band Red Seas Fire are spread all over England so using programmed drums allows to very easily send each other complete ideas and riffs. When it comes to recording final takes, we can use an electronic kit to capture our drummer’s performance without sacrificing the great drum tones the Toontrack software is giving us.
Any new exciting projects coming up in the next year that you can tell us about? The big event for me is the recording of my band’s first release, which will be taking place over this summer. It’s been a long time in the making, so we are very excited about that! I have a 3-way instrumental guitar project in the works, with Derya Nagle of the Safety Fire, and Ben Tovey of Rise to Remain. Those guys are both blindingly proficient guitarists and good friends so it’s going to be a great experience to make music with them!
In closing is there anything you would like to pass on to the Toontrack.com visitors? Yes - the Toontrack sample libraries and software present an amazing opportunity for enthusiasts and professionals alike to get access to incredible drum sounds with minimum hassle. I highly recommend them to any recording artists and producers out there, no matter what level you’re at!
